Dhurandhar 2 Sets a New Record as the Longest Indian Film of the 21st Century
The Dhurandhar franchise is once again in the spotlight, but this time not just for its box office potential. Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge is reportedly locked with a runtime of around 235 minutes (nearly 3 hours and 55 minutes), making it the longest Indian film released in the 21st century.
With this duration, the sequel overtakes Lagaan, the epic sports drama starring Aamir Khan, which had long been considered one of the lengthiest mainstream Indian blockbusters of the modern era.
A Franchise Built on Massive Success
The original Dhurandhar, which hit cinemas on December 5, turned out to be a historic success. Despite releasing only in Hindi without dubbed versions, the spy thriller crossed ₹1200 crore worldwide. Its exceptional performance established new standards for Hindi cinema and cemented the franchise’s popularity across global markets.
From Standalone Film to Two-Part Saga
Unlike grand cinematic universes such as Baahubali 2: The Conclusion or Pushpa 2: The Rule, Dhurandhar was not originally envisioned as a multi-part saga. It was planned as a single film. However, during post-production, the total recorded footage reportedly exceeded seven hours.
Rather than heavily trimming the narrative and compromising its scale, the producers decided to split the story into two parts. This strategic move not only preserved the creative vision but also helped build long-term franchise value.
Financial Cushion Gives Sequel an Edge
The first installment recovered its entire production cost and reportedly generated profits of over ₹300 crore. As a result, the sequel enters theatres without significant financial pressure. Trade analysts suggest that this gives Dhurandhar 2 a major advantage, as it does not carry the burden of recovering massive upfront investments.
High Expectations Ahead of Release
One area where the first film narrowly missed out was breaking all-time first-day and opening weekend records. With buzz for the sequel reaching unprecedented levels — and with a box office clash lined up against Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups — expectations are sky-high.
Given its record-breaking runtime, franchise goodwill, and massive anticipation, Dhurandhar 2 is poised to deliver one of the most talked-about theatrical releases of the year.
